Pet bereavement
Pet bereavement with Tejel Hassan
Animals have been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I cared for the stray dogs in my neighbourhood long before I had my own dog.
Over the years, the dogs and cats that I cared for taught me to understand their behaviour and language and I learnt, from them, what it truly means to respond to their needs. I also learnt about the practical realities of caring for pets - the daily routines, unexpected illness, the cost of vet care and how the financial pressure of caring for an unwell pet can add significant stress to an already difficult time.
My animals have provided me with joy, comfort and unconditional connection. I have also experienced the deep sorrow of saying goodbye to them especially when I held my own pets as they took their last breaths. I understand the profound weight of pet bereavement and I know how deeply that loss can reverberate throughout daily life, bringing sadness and tears, a loss of motivation and a painful absence in the home.
My life-long journey and experiences with animals influences my counselling practice. I know that pets are far more than just animals - they are family members, daily anchors and often our most constant source of emotional support.
Whether you are experiencing the very painful emotions that arise while caring for an ageing or sick pet or following the loss of a much-loved pet, I would be pleased to talk with you about your relationship with your pet.
